Adoption Rules
- Breeding is done to produce rats to be exhibited at shows, but first and foremost, my rats are my pets.
- I reserve first choice on selecting kittens to keep from each litter, known breeders always have 2nd choice if there are show/breed quality kittens remaining, 3rd choice is for public.
- SHFR rats adopted by the public are PETS only. No breeding is allowed!
- Rats are adopted in same-sex pairs unless you already have one of the same sex. Rats are very social and must have a companion. Rats from different litters can be combined.
- Adoption fee for a kitten (5 to 8 weeks) or a teenager (2 to 4 months) is $25, $30 for dumbos (based on date of reservation).
- Adoption fee for a rat 4 to 6 months is $15, $20 for dumbos.
- Adoption fee for rats older than 6 months or rescued rats is $10 or 2/$15.
- Rats are to be picked up at SHFR in Oakland unless I'm heading to Los Angeles for an American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (AFRMA) show. See the AFRMA site for show dates. Rats must be picked up within one week after their availability date.
- If you can no longer care for your rat, it should be returned to me and I will place it as a rescue. There will be no refund.
- No shipping.
- Reservations are always welcome. Reservations are more of a "first refusal". People making reserverations can always change their minds. Send me an email describing what you are looking for. Number, sex, ear type (dumbo or standard) and color. Please note that the more specific you are, the longer you will wait. Just so you know, girls and dumbos are extremely popular so I limit girl adoptions to only 1 dumbo per pair.
- If you adopt rats from me, you need to quarantine the new rats for a minimum of two weeks especially if you already have rats. Quarantine involves locating the new rats in another part of the house that has a separate airspace from other rats, pets and visitors.
- I never place a rat that is ill and I do quarantee the health of my rats. If during the two week quarantine period the rats develop any illnesses, you may return the rats to me for a refund.
